Cost per shave: what five years of shaving really costs

Handles are cheap and blades are not. The five-year arithmetic for cartridges, double-edge blades and electric heads, with every division shown.

Shaving is sold by the handle and paid for by the blade. The handle is a one-off between $12 and $180; the blade is a purchase you make a few hundred times, and that is where the whole difference between methods lives.

This guide divides each method's five-year total by the number of shaves in it, using the cost per use calculator's arithmetic: price plus consumables over the whole life, divided by uses per week times 52 times the years. All figures are worked examples with the date they were written.

Fix the denominator first

Every comparison in this category falls apart when the two sides divide by different numbers. Fix the denominator once: 5 shaves a week, 52 weeks a year, 5 years, which is 1,300 shaves. Every figure below divides by that same 1,300.

If you shave daily, the denominator is 1,825 and every cost per shave falls by about 29%, while the yearly spend rises. If you shave twice a week it is 520, and every cost per shave rises by 150%. The ranking between methods does not change in either case; only the size of the gap does.

This is why 'cheaper per blade' is not an answer on its own. A blade at 12 cents lasting 5 shaves is 2.4 cents a shave. A cartridge at $3.50 lasting 8 shaves is 44 cents a shave. The per-unit prices differ by a factor of 29, the per-shave prices by a factor of 18, and only the second number is the one you pay.

Five-year totals over 1,300 shaves (worked example, hardware and blades only)
MethodUp-frontConsumablesTotalCost per shave
Cartridge razor$12$570.50 — 163 cartridges at $3.50, one per 8 shaves$582.50about $0.45
Foil or rotary electric$180$120 — 3 head sets at $40, one every 18 months$300about $0.23
Double-edge safety razor$35$31.20 — 260 blades at $0.12, one per 5 shaves$66.20about $0.05

1,300 shaves is 5 a week for 5 years. Soap, cream and balm are excluded here and costed separately below, because they apply to all three methods.

The consumable the table leaves out

Lather and aftercare are the same cost whichever handle you hold, which is why they belong in their own line. The routine cost calculator takes container size, dose and applications: a 100 ml balm used at 2 ml a shave gives 50 shaves a bottle, so 260 shaves a year needs 5.2 bottles. At $22 a bottle that is $114.40 a year, or 44 cents a shave.

That single line is almost twice the electric shaver's 23 cents a shave and nine times the double-edge razor's 5 cents. For anyone using a cream, a balm and a post-shave product, the aftercare is the budget and the razor is a rounding error.

Soap is the cheap end of the same decision. A $18 puck of shaving soap lasting 12 months is $1.50 a month and about 7 cents a shave at 260 shaves a year, against a $9 can of foam lasting 6 weeks — 30 shaves — which is about 30 cents a shave. The puck is roughly a quarter of the price per shave and lasts eight times as long.

Balm, 2 ml a shave$22 for 100 ml50 shaves, about 10 weeksabout $0.44
Shaving soap puck$1812 monthsabout $0.07
Canned foam$96 weeks, about 30 shavesabout $0.30

Days per container is container size divided by dose times applications a day, the same formula the routine cost calculator uses. Dose is the variable people underestimate most; 2 ml is a coin-sized amount.

Where an electric shaver's money actually goes

Braun's guidance is to change the foil and cutter block every 18 months with good cleaning habits and average shaving frequency, and to change both together because they wear as a pair. Over 5 years that is 3 sets. At $40 a set the consumables are $120, which is 40% of the $300 five-year total on a $180 shaver.

Skipping a replacement does not save $40. A worn pair pulls rather than cuts, the shave takes longer, and the usual response is to press harder, which is the mechanism behind most complaints about electric shavers and sensitive skin. The replacement is the product, in the same sense that blades are the product in a cartridge system.

The other hidden clock is the battery. Cells in a shaver are often soldered to the board rather than socketed, so when capacity falls the unit is replaced rather than repaired. Before buying, look for whether the maker sells a replacement cell or a service for it, because a 5-year total assumes the shaver reaches year 5.

  1. Diarise the head replacement 18 months from the purchase date
  2. Replace foil and cutter together rather than separately
  3. Rinse and dry the head after each use; cleaning habit is part of the 18-month figure
  4. Check whether a replacement battery or battery service is sold before buying
  5. Compare shavers on the price of a head set, not only on the price of the shaver

The price index, and whether to wait

In the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics consumer price index, personal care products rose 2.1% over the 12 months to September 2026 and haircuts and other personal care services rose 3.7%. On a $180 shaver a 2.1% drift is under $4 a year, which is less than one blade pack and far less than one month of the cartridge habit it would replace.

Waiting is therefore almost never the move; switching is. Moving from the cartridge line of the table to the double-edge line saves about $516 over 5 years, which is roughly 137 times the annual price drift on the hardware.

If you buy from abroad, the landed cost calculator applies the same order customs does — duty on the item price, then tax on item price plus shipping plus duty. U.S. Customs and Border Protection holds the importer liable for duty rather than the seller, and states that the suspension of duty-free de minimis treatment covers merchandise valued at $800 or less arriving via all modes, including the international postal network.

Before you buy

  • Fix one shave count for every option before comparing anything: shaves a week times 52 times the years
  • Price the consumable a method needs for 5 years and add it to the handle price
  • Measure your actual balm dose; 2 ml is a coin-sized amount and most people use more
  • Compare electric shavers on the price of a replacement head set as well as the shaver
  • Check whether the shaver's battery can be replaced or serviced
  • Try a sampler pack of double-edge blades before buying a hundred of one kind
  • If importing, enter price, shipping, duty rate and your local sales-tax rate into the landed cost calculator

Questions readers ask

Why is the cartridge gap so large?
Because the cartridge carries the whole business model and the double-edge blade carries none of it. At $3.50 a cartridge lasting 8 shaves, 1,300 shaves needs 163 cartridges and $570.50. At 12 cents a blade lasting 5 shaves it needs 260 blades and $31.20. The handles cost $12 and $35, so the handle is noise in both cases.
Do cheaper double-edge blades shave worse?
They differ in sharpness and in coating, and both affect how many shaves you get rather than whether it works. A blade that gives 3 shaves instead of 5 raises your blade count from 260 to about 433 over 1,300 shaves, which is $52 instead of $31. Buying a sampler pack of several brands costs a few dollars and settles it for your own beard.
Is a shaving brush worth buying?
It earns its place through the soap, not the lather theatre. A brush lets you use a $18 puck that lasts 12 months, about 7 cents a shave, in place of canned foam at about 30 cents. That 23-cent gap is roughly $60 a year at 260 shaves, so a $25 brush pays for itself in about 5 months.
How do I budget for a shaver that dies early?
Assume it does not reach 5 years and the per-shave figure rises in proportion. A $180 shaver replaced at 3 years spreads $180 plus 2 head sets over 780 shaves, which is about 33 cents rather than 23 cents. Checking battery serviceability before buying is the cheapest protection against that outcome.
Does shaving less often save money?
It lowers annual spend and raises cost per shave, because the hardware is spread over fewer uses. Shaving twice a week instead of five times takes a $300 five-year electric total down to the same $300 across 520 shaves, which is about 58 cents each. The yearly bill falls; the per-shave figure does not.
